The directorial debut of Jim Loach (son of director Ken Loach), starring Emily Watson, Hugo Weaving, David Wenham and Tara Morice. Based on a novel “Empty Cradles” by Margaret Humphreys, the screenplay was written by Scottish Rona Munro (Aimee & Jaguar, Almost Adult). The film tells the story of Margaret Humphreys (Watson), a social worker from Nottingham who uncovered the childcare scandal of forcibly relocating poor children to Australia and Canada. Margaret reunites estranged families and brings worldwide attention to the cause. Deported children were promised oranges and sunshine but they got hard labour and life in institutions.
