KAGUYA-HIME NO MONOGATARI (かぐや姫の物語) is an upcoming Japanese animated film produced by Studio Ghibli, and directed and co-written by studio’s co-founder, Isao Takahata (高畑 勲), based on the classic Japanese folktale Taketori Monogatari (The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter). It has been 12 years since Takahata’s last feature film, 1999’s My Neighbors the Yamadas (ホーホケキョ となりの山田くん), and his last work was a short made with 35 animation creators in the world, Winter Days (冬の日) in 2003.

KAGUYA-HIME NO MONOGATARI was initially announced to be released simultaneously with Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises/風立ちぬ), another Studio Ghibli film by Hayao Miyazaki (宮崎 駿) in Japan in the Summer of 2013, which was the first time that the works of the two director were released together since the release of the films My Neighbor Totoro (となりのトトロ) and Grave of the Fireflies (火垂るの墓) in 1988. However, in February 2013, distributor Toho announced that the release of Kaguya-Hime no Monogatari would be delayed to Fall 2013, citing concerns that the storyboards were not yet complete.

The story follows an old man who makes a living by selling bamboo. One day, he finds a princess in a bamboo. The princess is only the size of a finger. Her name is Kaguya. When Kaguya grows up, 5 men from prestigious families propose to her. Kaguya asks the men to find memorable marriage gifts for her, but the 5 men are unable to find what Kaguya ants. Then, the Emperor of Japan proposes to her.
