LIFE OF CRIME is a crime comedy film based on the novel by Elmore Leonard, and directed by Daniel Schechter. The film served as a prequel of sorts to Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, which was, in turn, based on Leonard’s own literary sequel, Rum Punch (The Switch). Starring Jennifer Aniston, John Hawkes, Mos Def, Yasiin Bey, Isla Fisher, Will Forte, and Tim Robbins, it was the closing night movie of the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival and the opening film of the Abu Dhabi Film Festival.
Margaret “Mickey” Dawson (Aniston) is a loving, if not naive, housewife whose husband, Frank Dawson (Robbins), has been embezzling millions for years and keeping the cash in off-shore accounts without her knowledge. Two career criminals, Louis Gara (Hawkes) and Ordell Robbie (Def), catch wind of his scam and figure if they hold Mickey for ransom, Frank would have no choice but to pay up a million dollars. Except, what they don’t plan on is that Frank’s head over heels for his sex-kitten mistress, Melanie (Fisher), and doesn’t want his wife back.
