EFFIE GRAY (originally titled Effie) is an upcoming biographical period-drama directed by Richard Laxton (TV movie “Burton and Taylor” helmer). The script was written by Oscar-winning Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility), who also appears in the film as Lady Eastlake.
From the producers of the cinematic masterpieces Howard’s End and Tree of Life, the film explores the scandalous true story of the troubled relationship between Victorian art critic John Ruskin and Effie, his teenage bride. Dakota Fanning stars as the eponymous Effie, leading a supporting cast of prized English actors including Emma Thompson, Julie Walters, Greg Wise, and David Suchet.
After marrying at the tender age of 19, Effie (Fannin) quickly realises her marriage is a lie when Ruskin (Wise) refuses to consummate it. Yearning for affection, she soon falls for the charms of the artist John Everett Millais (Sturridge). Desperate to be freed from John, Effie embarks on a life-changing journey to become one of the first women in history to seek a divorce from her husband, making her an everlasting figure in feminist history.
