LOVE & FRIENDSHIP is a romantic comedy film written and directed by Whit Stillman (Metropolitan, The Last Days of Disco, Damsels in Distress), based on Jane Austen’s 1871 epistolary novel Lady Susan. Premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, the film stars Kate Beckinsale, Chloë Sevigny, Xavier Samuel, Tom Bennett and Stephen Fry.
Set in the opulent drawing rooms of eighteenth-century English society, the film focuses on the machinations of a beautiful widow, Lady Susan Vernon (Beckinsale), who, while waiting for social chatter about a personal indiscretion to pass, takes up temporary residence at her in-laws’ estate. While there, the intelligent, flirtatious, and amusingly egotistical Lady Vernon is determined to be a matchmaker for her daughter Frederica—and herself too, naturally. She enlists the assistance of her old friend Alicia (Sevigny), but two particularly handsome suitors (Samuel and Bennett) complicate her orchestrations.
