MARY AND THE WITCH’S FLOWER (Mary to Majo no Hana / メアリと魔女の花) is the first animated feature from former Studio Ghibli producer Yoshiaki Nishimura’s new Japanese animation house, Studio Ponoc (スタジオポノック). It is directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi (The Secret World of Arrietty, When Marnie Was There), who co-written the screenplay with Riko Sakaguchi (The Tale of the Princess Kaguya), based on Mary Stewart’s 1971 children’s novel, The Little Broomstick.
The story is about a little girl named Mary finds a broomstick in the woods, which whisks her to the grounds of Endor College, a college run by witches. Once there, she discovers mutated animals from failed spells being kept in cages. Although she manages to free the animals, she is discovered by the evil head of the college and her colleague, who quickly pursue her in her escape!
